Is an architectural resurfacing service that helps reimagine existing architectures by simply changing their surfaces while maintaining the material substrate intact.
This is your… ‘fresh coat … makes things looks brand new’ argument. Riffing off of the practice of ‘enjalbegar con cal’ or ‘cal coating’ that is common in spain and the basque country, where I am originally and culturally from. Which is the application of a chalky calcium based white coating (not paint) to facades that performs as water repellent and termite repellent and its a sort of constant household project to ‘freshen up the chicken coup’ … The project Intends to re-appeal to our aestheticize desires as a way to lessen the likelihood of demolition and waste. To motivate us to keep what we have already made or built by just renewing its surface or facade…
As a project we are interested in expanding the repertoire of strategies for decoupling surface expression from substrate from white coating to spraying, wallpapering, dipping, wrapping, taping, etc.
We have all heard the statistics about demolitions, something like: ‘The EPA has estimated that 92% of all construction-related waste produced annually in the US is the result of renovations and demolitions’. The project is a tactical response to that.
It will invite the public to propose motifs and materials to use for this resurfacing of existing buildings and objects which then stock will translate into 3D interactive proposals through game engine and will create physical mock ups and material tests of these proposed material applications by inviting the public to submit proposals for the redecoration of buildings and later interact with the results, the project aims to invigorate the public’s stewardship and increased affinity to the environments and architectures all around us.
Putting that which is static or deteriorating back into circulation in the social imaginary.
The resurfacing techniques are all to be based on post-consumer materials or otherwise made from overabundant available, cheap, discarded or otherwise accessible objects and materials
asking contributors to respond to current availabilities and aesthetic proclivities, in order to experiment with the different outcomes possible when responding to a current material context through a multi-author framework.
Stock will then create techniques to process those proposed post-consumer materials and turn them into material tests for surface coatings. Leaning on techniques likes shredding, mulching, powdering, or turning into strips in order to later use these by spraying, wrapping or taping them onto the surfaces. Cork spray, rubber mulch spray and roofing foil strips here serve as material precedents.
The goal of the project is to create a mixed material-digital project that ushers in a reimagination of our built environments through new material and aesthetic contexts and material experimentations.
Giving architecture a new public aesthetic availability and create a new public visual participation and a renewed conversation between architect and audience.
All while changing the just the surface while keeping its material core/substrate intact.
